Think Food & Farming
Many new resources were produced during the Year and Think Food & Farming hopes this interest in engaging our young people will continue.
Schools are being encouraged to continue to take part in growing and cooking activities and visits to farms for the opportunity to:
- Find out how food is grown and produced
- Explore why food, and how we produce it, matters
- Make informed choices about food and healthy nutrition
- Discover what happens on a real-life farm
- Experience what the countryside can offer
- Learn more about environmental issues linked to food and the countryside

The Year of Food and Farming
YoFF had a simple aim: to bring together schools, farmers, organisation like FCFCG and food producers to help give children first-hand experience of where their food comes from.
FCFCG had many links with this event, both through the work of our members and via the School Farms Network. Our patron HRH The Prince of Wales is also the patron of YOFF.
Research results
Research commissioned by the Year of Food and Farming shows that learning about food and its production is of great interest and relevance to 7-10 year olds. Most now know a great deal about where certain types of food come from and how they can maintain a healthy diet, 93% of all 7-16 year olds claim to have altered their eating habits over the past year. Looking beyond the Year, almost all schools that participated in the Year plan to undertake growing and cooking activities and 79% plan to undertake visits to farms.
Think Food and Farming is the exciting legacy project building on the successes of the Year of Food and Farming which helped youngsters to understand more about where their food comes from and to involve them in memorable first hand learning experiences.
Think Food and Farming will continue to work with partner organisations at a national, regional and local level to promote visits to farms, and to provide easy access to a variety of growing and cooking educational activities to complement both school-based studies and outdoor visits.
